Get your umbrella out because it is starting to pour!  Ha, not really.  I was really excited to write this blog when it was actually raining outside and I thought that since it is winter here in California that it might continue to rain.  However, my hopes were soon shattered and I remembered that we live in the land of eternal summers.  Yet, all of us should be using an umbrella to help block the strong sun and protect our skin, right?  So, there you have it.  So, what is it that you need an umbrella for? I am sure many of us have heard of CA umbrella insurance, but do we know what an umbrella insurance policy is, what it covers, or who is really in need of a California umbrella insurance policy?

Umbrella Insurance provides exactly the type of coverage that it sounds like it would; it provides an umbrella for you to stand under. Liability issues are everywhere and although we live in sunny, beautiful California, we are all aware that a lawsuit being filed now days is a very common occurrence unfortunately.  Basically, Umbrella Insurance policies protect you from liability issues that go beyond the liability limits of standard insurance policies, such as your homeowner’s insurance, car insurance, etc. This policy literally puts you under its umbrella so that when you exceed the liability coverage limits on an insurance line, you will still be protected.

So, now we understand what a CA umbrella policy is, but how can you know whether you need one or not and can you really afford an additional bill?  According to an article written by Fox Business, Kevin Noles, a product manager at USAA says, “Deciding whether to get an umbrella when you're renting is a matter of adding up your exposures.  Are you a hunter? Do you golf? Even though you're renting, you may have a swimming pool. The more exposures you have, the more the likelihood of something catastrophic happening."  This is of course very applicable for those who own a home and a car as well.  Most of us do have liability coverage, that possibly only covers up to $100,000, which most likely will not be enough.  In this situation you will be left with an overwhelming financial burden.

A good question to ask yourself is whether or not you could afford to not have an umbrella insurance policy, California?  These policies are very affordable, many only costing $300 (which is $1,000,000 in liability coverage) a year and decreasing in amount added, as you boost your liability protection.  Frank N. Darras, an insurance attorney and founding partner of DarrasLaw says, "Liability insurance is inexpensive and a must-have, whether you're coming out of college, transitioning out of foreclosure or a senior who is starting to rent because you have sold your home or lost your home."  There are discounts offered by combining policies with the same carrier, so it is always beneficial to seek out a CA insurance company who can be your one stop shop.
